Crazy Taxi the movie: Confirmed
We can’t really work out if the film industry likes us gaming types. We have started to take a hefty chunk of the disposable income of the world and will soon overtake the movies in terms of revenue generated. One thing is for sure though. They like our ideas!

Sega has confirmed that Crazy Taxi will be made into a full motion picture by Goodman/Rosen Productions and will be directed by Richard Donner of The Goonies and Lethal Weapon fame.

"We realize Sega is a giant worldwide brand and that 'Crazy Taxi' has been a hit at arcades and on video game systems," said Gary Goodman, who will serve as a producer on the film. "We feel we can turn this game into a mass-market picture."

There is mass appeal for the Dreamcast game. It is the number three game of all time on the Dreamcast, notching up sales of $30 million since its launch last year.

“Crazy Taxi' is one of the biggest franchises to come out of Sega in the last two years,” said Jane Thompson, director of licensing and character development at Sega of America. “The 'Crazy Taxi' movie is a very important element in turning this best-selling video game franchise into an entertainment franchise. We have a lot of properties that have entertainment potential, including Space Channel 5, Virtua Fighter and Jet Grind Radio,” Thompson said. "Film and TV provides us with another avenue to expand our video games into entertainment.

Virtua Fighter movie eh? We like the sound of that!

So is Donner a gamer or, erm a kebab? It would appear he is a kebab. “There are going to be a lot of video game-based movies behind Crazy Taxi, and probably a few in front of it, but that won't affect this film,” Donner said. “When we have a solid script and we're ready to do it, we'll do it.”

Great. Lets hope that Donner is not too distracted by market share and is able to release the full potential of what should be the best game movie of all time.
