Miyamoto's Wii Sports Resort Golf Fibs!

Putting deceit and 18 holes together

Shigeru Miyamoto - if that's even his real name.

So, how do you think the golf part of Wii Sports Resort found its way into the game? You would think Nintendo decided that with the release of MotionPlus, it could really go to town with what it had established in the first Wii Sports. Well, there was a bit of that going on, but mostly there was just a lie told by the beloved Shigeru Miyamoto to some dullard journalists.

In the latest 'Iwata Asks' interview, in which Nintendo's president chats to his staff about key Ninty projects, Takayuki Shimamura, of the EAD Software Development Department, uttered, "Right after getting back to Japan (from E3 '08), (Miyamoto) suddenly said: 'You know we’re including golf now.'

"Apparently he’d stated in an interview that this time round golf shots would be determined by the backswing, even though at that time a golf game didn't exist in any shape or form! (laughs)"

Iwata chipped in with, "It’s a trick he often uses! (laughs)"

Miyamoto: "That’s right. I block off the escape route."

It's not just Miyamoto, however. It's apparently rife at Nintendo's senior levels. Even Iwata added, "I’m not quite as bad as Miyamoto-san, but I have been known to use the same trick on occasion."

Miyamoto doesn't just tell porkies to the press, however. He is apparently also a tad economical with the truth to his boss. Shimamura later said, "We originally planned to have a 9 hole course as we had on Wii Sports. We were developing the game based on the plan for a 9 hole course when the producer, (Katsuya) Eguchi-san, announced that Miyamoto-san had been speaking to Iwata-san. When we asked what they had been discussing, we were told: 'Golf is going to be 18 holes after all.' I did wonder if it was really true though..." And that's how we got 18 holes in Wii Sports Resort's golf instead of just nine.

Because of lies, fibs, subterfuge! Still, at least Shiggy follows through rather than simply pumping vapour into the air and making statements about fabled features that never get close to reality.

You can see the rest of the interview through here. Whether you believe a single word of it is up to you...
