Asteroids the Movie Goes Universal! Yes, Seriously...
Universal has won a four studio bidding war for the rights to make a movie of Atari's Asteroids. Asteroids! That's right, there will be an Asteroids movie and there was actually a bidding war for the rights.

Lorenzo di Bonaventura, producer of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and the upcoming G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, is attached to produce. Matthew Lopez, who has worked on Bedtime Stories and Race to Witch Mountain, is penning the movie.

All Lopez has to do is create an entire movie around a triangle that shoots at chunks of rock. Hollywood has, it must be said, had better ideas than developing a movie around a 30 year old game about a bunch of white lines. Maybe Universal should have gone for something with a story? Or characters, maybe.

Pong the Movie, anyone?

Personally, I think that hyperspace is the lynch pin to this story.

Oh, great, we are going to have to watch another spotty 80's teenage flick, of kids fanatically playing Asteroids to protect their dignity (almost sounds like some of the latest transformers sub themes)? As, if you blow up an asteroid in front of you in real life, you are likely to head into a shower of deadly fragments (actually, that sounds like a nice variation for an asteroid game, but in the end you will have a cloud of deadly sand like particles, but a pet pacman to eat them all might cure that, and we could. use him as an end of level boos once he gets full...).
