Xbox 360: Gamerscore Resets for Cheats

Major Nelson's mate says so.

No! Not that kind of cheetah!
Major Nelson's latest podcast features the words of one Stephen Toulouse of the very serious-sounding 'Xbox Live Policy and Enforcement Unit' - okay, it doesn't actually say 'Unit', it just sounds good. Anyway, Stephen has some harsh - but we hope fair - policies to enforce when it comes to Xbox Live.

If you are caught cursing, behaving like a spoilt brat, and sulking... no, sorry, if you're caught cheating, not only will your Gamerscore be reset, you'll have have a flag on your Gamertag that basically calls you a cheat (or 'cheater' for our US pals) for life.

Harsh? Yes. Fair? Well, not if your kid brother's best mate's evil mate has been using your account to screw with other folk and up your Gamerscore to something that won't get you 'owned like a goddam noob!'.

We're waiting to see how wrinkles such as this will be ironed out.

Listen to Major Nelson here.

This is a horrible article. I expect better from SPOnG.

First off, this is an old story, past its "Best if used by:" date, I am unsure of exactly when I first heard about this, but it was quite some time ago.

Second, it is horribly vague, bordering on misleading, the cheating in question is AFAIK strictly limited to a single category of offense. That being a "gamesave hack" of some type or description whereby a LIVE! user downloads a gamesave file previously uploaded by a user who has presumably unlocked the Achievement in question legitimately, thereby unlocking the Achievement for themselves, illegitimately. It does not address of affect "boosting" or any number of other less than honorable methods of gaining Achievements. As an aside, MS keeps a list of 360's which are used by the people who upload these gamesave files, and any 360's on the list lose their ability to "sign" content which will be usable on other consoles.

Third, there are no "wrinkles" to be "ironed out". If you are stupid or careless enough to allow someone access to your LIVE! profile and they screw you over by this form of cheating, you're buggered (That means "f**ked in the ass", for those in the US, who can read through the new profanity filter). end of.

Doesn't seem like ANY follow up research was even attempted on this...FSM knows you had enough time...

For the record, MS started doing this (resetting Gamerscores and labelling offenders as Cheats) March 25 of this year.

Amazing...I listened to the podcast in question. I'm convinced the SPOnGer who wrote this article did not, or was blind drunk when he did, as the question regarding "your kid brother's ..." was SPECIFICALLY addressed by the interviewee (@ 35:45 into the podcast) . Answer: "You are responsible for what happens on your profile, your problem at that point (after your Gamerscore has been reset) is with the person who did that (cheated).

Also, apparently there is another method of cheating which is addressed, some kind of "glitch", whereby profiles are switched rapidly or something.

Stephen also goes on to say that the persons responsible for determining who is or is not a cheater are quite conservative, and require a high level of proof before action is taken, so this isn't something people are likely to have happen to them accidentally

Edit: MS may have began doing this before March 25, but that was when they made a point of making it public.
