The chances of a PS3 or Xbox 360 version of
Spore are looking slimmer than ever.
Speaking to Game Daily,
Spore creator Will Wright (who is still acting as a consultant to EA, despite having left to focus on Stupid Fun Club) has said that Maxis can either do a PS3/360
Spore game or it can focus on more PC content.
"I know there's been a lot of talk about it internally", Wright said, "but for us it's really an opportunity/cost issue. You know, we either do that or we continue creating new applications on the PC or we kind of go into the handheld arena. I can't specifically say what the plans are right now, but really all these things are measured against each other."
Eh? "We keep doing PC apps or we do console or we do handheld, depends on the cash"... ah, now we understand.
A 'next-gen' console version began to look even unlikely as Wright indicated that Maxis has a lukewarm attitude toward developing the game for the PS3 or 360 because of their lack of unique features. "We can't do everything at once, so we have to say, 'What platforms would it kind of evolve the fastest on?' So you can sort of look at a straight port to the PS3 and Xbox 360 and basically have the same game we have on the PC... or we could say, 'What can we do on this platform that will help us explore different parts of the design?'"
Wright went on to point to the Wii, which Maxis is already developing
Spore Hero for.
SPOnG, for its part, would like to see a 360 or PS3 version of
Spore, given that the main issue that hamstrung the PC version - DRM - could be circumnavigated on console.
