Sega of Japan has confirmed that it will be releasing Shenmue 2 in Japan on September 6th. The game is now complete and just needs what has been described as “minor polishing” before it goes gold. This means that the “advanced detailing issues” that had dogged the early builds of the game must have been resolved, surely welcome news to the families of Yu Suzuki’s team!
More important to us however, is the news that the translations and necessary voice acting is well underway at Sega’s American office in San Francisco. Players of the original Shenmue will remember the voice-acting with great fondness.
Hours of listening to conversations like ”Do you remember that day? The day it snowed? Yes that’s right, the day of the incident. Did you see a black car? The day it snowed?”
Followed by “Oh, the day of the incident! A black car? Erm, no I don’t think so. Perhaps Yazumi-san saw it.” And so on, and so on.
Though the shocking voice acting did detract from the original, it didn’t do it a great amount of damage and Sega has vowed to make a greater effort with the follow-up. Thank heavens.
