Dave Perry, formerly of Shiny, currently at Acclaim... and the man behind
Earthworm Jim, has publicly called out Sony after it called into question his claims that the next PSP signals the death of UMD.
Over on
Twitter, Dave Perry has tweeted, "John Koller is publically questioning my post about PSP 2. So I confirmed with Top PSP 2 developers. John, state that PSP 2 WILL have UMD."
Following Perry's
claim that Sony "has" the PSP2 and that it comes sans UMD drive, Koller (director of hardware marketing for the PSP)
said that Sony had "never engaged" with Perry. He said that he does not know where Perry's information is coming from.
Perry will be astonishingly lucky to get a firm response from Koller or Sony as a whole. While Koller was happy to cast aspersions on the source of Perry's information, he remained typically non-committal on whether Perry was actually right.
Adding more fuel to the fire,
Eurogamer reports that a "development source close to Sony" (which could, of course, be any developer working on a PlayStation project) told it that the next PSP won't have UMD (as Perry said) and that it will have a sliding screen that can cover up the majority of its controls and shoulder button-only play.
With Sony having admitted that it is
pushing developers away from UMD and towards digital distribution, the chances of the next PSP being download only certainly aren't bad...
