The word on the show floor at the recent E3 videogames conference held in LA was the Capcom has canned all future Streetfighter Alpha games and that Streetfighter Alpha 4 would see no further development.
Alpha 4 was heavily rumoured to be the definitive Capcom 2D fighter and set to feature all of the characters from the original Final Fight and many others from Capcom’s massive selection of games.
The reason given for the alleged cancellation was the further development of the Capcom Vs SNK series, the latest version of which, Capcom Vs SNK 2 was a massive hit at the show. Capcom’s developers have quite an obvious strategy when it comes to their latest project and that is to slowly add more and more characters and play modes.
SNK Vs Capcom 2 had six different fighting groves where as the original only has 2. There are also many new characters including Akuma as standard and Samurai Spirits’ Hoamaru. Also included in the new game are Art of Fighting’s Ryo and several new characters from the King of Fighters series.
The appeal for the new series is massive, with the arcades, on free-play, at Capcom’s stand, being one of the busiest areas in E3. When we questioned some of the beat em up fans queuing to play Capcom Vs SNK 2 all said that they would rather Capcom incorporate any future Alpha projects into the SNK Vs Capcom series which makes sense.
Players and devotees of the fighting genre have always wanted to combine characters from different games, just to see how they fair up. Capcom first put this into practice back in 1997 releasing X-Men Vs Streetfighter, which pitted fighters from X-Men: Children of the Atom against what was essentially high-jumping versions of the characters found in Streetfighter Alpha 2.
In Japan at the moment the most played fighter, by some margin is the Original Capcom Vs SNK, taking precedence over King of Fighters 2000, Streetfighter 3 Third Strike and Marvel Vs Capcom 2.
Capcom was unwilling to comment on the Alpha series but an official was willing to make this statement. “The main focus of our developers concerned with fighting games, at this time, is the continuous improvement of the Capcom Vs SNK series. There is still work to do on the most recent version and the follow-up is at conceptual stage. The status of the Streetfighter Alpha 4 series is unchanged.”
