In a refreshingly positive statement, Ubisoft has announced that it has expanded its Brazilian operations, buying up Porto Alegre-based Southlogic Studios.
The company, which is according to Ubisoft, "Brazil’s most experienced and premier development studio", has been around since 1996 working on handheld, console and PC games as well as providing outsourcing and porting services. Brazil's "premier development studio"'s most recent project was Imagine: Wedding Designer. Not to undermine the importance of kid/girl friendly-titles in a publisher's portfolio but... well...
The company has also worked on the Deer Hunter series and says it was the first South American company approved for Xbox and GameCube!
Anyway, it's refreshing to see that in the face of growing numbers of cutbacks in the games industry, someone is actually expanding.
Southlogic will be absorbed into Ubisoft Sao Paulo but will continue to operate from its current premises as a satellite office.
"As Brazil’s most experienced and premier development studio, Southlogic has proven its agility in adapting to new technologies and genres on a variety of platforms", uttered Christine Burgess-Quémard, executive director of worldwide studios at Ubisoft. "This acquisition reinforces our commitment to attracting talent in South America, and Brazil in particular, further boosting the group’s ambitious expansion plans."
