UK Game Charts: 2009 Kicks Off
The first UK Games Charts are in of the year, with Electronic Arts' FIFA 09 kicking off the new year as it spent Christmas - at Number 1.

Despite a 41% drop in sales, it bumps Activision Blizzard's Call of Duty: World at War from the top spot. CoD: World at War sits at Number 2 with a 50% drop in sales. Before the charts start to sound all gloomy with sales dropping off we might as well just tell you - it's January, sales on everything are down. Everything bar Nintendo's 100 Classic Book Collection, which we'll get to in a bit.

A 50% drop in sales might seem dramatic, but what's left is still enough to keep EA's Need for Speed: Undercover well at bay, with the racer sitting 5,000 sales behind World at War at Number 3.

All in all, Activision sees the new year in well, with Guitar Hero: World Tour up from Number 7 to Number 4. Quantum of Solace also hangs in there, dropping one place to lurk just inside the Top 10 at Number 9.

SEGA's Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games fares well, up from Number 9 to Number 5 over a year after its release. It has dislodged Wii Play to get there, putting Nintendo's peripheral seller at Number 6. The title replaces Mario Kart Wii as Nintendo's current best seller, with the kart racer down four places (and 60%) to Number 8. That makes it one place behind Ubisoft's Far Cry 2, which has burned its way (procedurally, no doubt) back into the Top 10. It's up four places from Number 11 to Number 7.

Sonic gets a second look-in on the Charts at the murky depths of the Top 10. SEGA's Sonic Unleashed holds steady at Number 10.

Then, as the one title that sees a jump in sales, we have 100 Classic Book Collection making its first Top 40 appearance at Number 27.

A point of interest for keen Chart watchers - this week marks the début of budget Wii and DS Charts. Interesting that the PS3 got a budget Chart before the Wii did...

Next week... nothing whatsoever is coming out. It's January!
