Jack Buser, the director of PlayStation Home has confirmed and then re-affirmed that the Open Beta for Sony's PlayStation Home 'social networking' add-on for the PS3 will be available by the end of this year.
This gives the company 34 days to deliver on a promise. The Beta was announced by then president of Sony World Studios Phil Harrison in 2007. Back then, Harrison stated that a more publicly accessible beta trial would open in April of 2007; the full service
would launch in "Fall 2007".
Since then its slipped twice, finally with the head of Sony Computer Entertainment Kaz Hirai stating effectively that it
would be out when it was ready. Buser, however, in his interview with
IGN was a great deal more assertive with dates. He said, "Like we've said, we're excited about moving PlayStation Home into its Open Beta stage this year. Once we make the move to Open Beta, everyone will have access to PlayStation Home."
He re-enforced this later in the interview, stating, "PlayStation Home is nearing the final stages of our Closed Beta. Last week we successfully moved to our 1.0 client, which places us on schedule for the launch of Open Beta this year.
And you should expect when it does come to see "every major gaming and consumer brand out there", according to Jack.
