It looks like the map featured in
Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, which will cover much of the same ground as the one in
GTA IV, will be nearly as big as the console version.
A recent article in a Spanish games magazine has apparently revealed that the map will feature all the areas in the console game, minus Alderney (Jersey City in the real world). This comes via Nintendo Everything, which does not cite the name of the magazine in question.
Other fresh nuggets of gameplay detail also popped up. The GPS (along with other informational bits and bobs such as e-mail) will be on the touch screen, while the action takes place on the top screen. Items such as Molotov Cocktails and grenades will also apparently be controlled via the touch screen. The GPS, like that in
GTA IV, will show the quickest legal routes between points on the map. Details of new finds such as gas stations will also be added to the map.
The importance of drugs was emphasised, with the most effective way to shift them being to buy in one neighbourhood and sell in another. The drug system was compared to
Drugwars, an old DOS game. Demand for drugs (including prices) will be mapped out.
Also given a mention was the fact that the camera will swivel 360 degrees and a taxi can be summoned by whistling into the DS's mic.
If all the above proves to be bona fide,
Chinatown Wars is shaping up to be a pretty deep handheld experience. Maybe it goes some way to explain why we
won't be getting the game until early 2009 now...
