Movies, Email and Phone for the Nintendo DSi and DS?
It's been all go at the Nintendo 'Get things trade-marked' offices of late with some 40 new IPs entered into the Japanese trademark database for the DS and DSi.

While a great deal of these will be for protection purposes only, a few leap out as very, very potential indeed. At the top of the list is a threat to Sony's PSP (and maybe even the apparently soon-to-be-dominant Apple iPhone), DSiMovie.

Also challenging to the iPhone (given the DS's install base and our total guestimate) are: DSiMail and DSPhone.

Although there's a heap of possibly never-to-be-seen titles in there, a final one made us look a little askance: DSiStation. What on earth would that be having a pop at?

The full list - as garnered by Siliconera is:

Too bad they didn't trademark DSiPhone...now that would have confirmed the new name for Ninty's real next handheld for sure!

I think nintendo would be silly to make the DS a phone or have pone based apps on there, they would be better to enter the mobile market in a completely new way with new hardware seperate from the DS franchise, no matter how popular portable gaming becomes a dedicated hadheld console/phone would never out do a dedicated phone or a dedicated Console.

its only a matter of time before Sony enters the market with a PSPPhone and how long before MS gives us the portable XBOX Apples phone will have some dominance but he phone is less accessable to people, 50%+ of the DS owners market is "casuals" (skipping the term argument) and how many of them have an Iphone, how many kids can buy an iphone or convince parents to shell for one, even the Payasugo version is more than a PS3!,

Handheld gaming market is going to be fun over the next couple of years, and when apple starts to make money from gaming, how long till they want the home console bite?
