UK Video Game Charts: Gears Crunches Sackboys
All the holding of the breath and the "Will cute and lovely win out against brutal and fighty?" arguments that everybody has been having in the pub can be put to rest. So can the "Will the PS3-exclusive wipe the floor with the Xbox 360 exclusive?" calm and balanced discussions you've been having over croissants.

Not only has Epic's Gears of War 2 Xbox 360 bone-cruncher hit top spot in the Chart-Track Gfk All Formats chart, according to Chart-Track, "Gears of War 2 becomes the third largest 360 Week 1 title ever (behind GTA IV and Halo 3)", it is also "the eighth largest Week 1 overall."

That's a straightforward win.

So, how did LittleBigPlanet do bearing in mind that it had two days more on sale? Well, the PS3 exclusive came in... at Number 4. Sitting above Sackboy was last week's Number 1, Fallout 3 at Number 3 and also multi-format FIFA 09 at Number 2.

The rest of the Top 10 is largely expected with only two new entries aside from Gears 2 and LBP. These come in the form of Professor Layton And The Curious Village for the DS; and the multi-format THQ offering of WWE Smackdown Vs Raw 2009. The latter saw, "PS3 and 360 virtually neck and neck with 34% and 33% of sales respectively."

Next week, look out for Call of Duty: World at War coming this week - and a fine bet for Xmas Number 1. That's if the aunties and grannies don't all plump for FIFA 09... that's if Need For Speed: Undercover doesn't nick it; well, it is Xmas.

All Formats Chart
(NE) 1 Gears Of War 2 - Microsoft
(2) 2 FIFA 09 - EA Sports
(1) 3 Fallout 3 - Bethesda Softworks
(NE) 4 LittleBigPlanet - SCE
(NE) 5 WWE Smackdown Vs Raw 2009 - THQ
(NE) 6 Professor Layton And The Curious Village - Nintendo
(9) 7 Mario Kart Wii - Nintendo
(7) 8 Quantum Of Solace - Activision
(5) 9 Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 - Konami
(3) 10 Wii Fit - Nintendo

GoW-2 pure quality, but it'll be interesting to see how it holds against WoW. Fallout 3 heavily overated imo.

Gears was always going to sell more than LBP, it's an established franchise with an enthusiastic fanbase and a larger potential market.

However, looking at the individual format chart, LBP was actually the second best selling SKU last week. Some of that may have been to do with the extra two days it had in its launch week, although our local Gamestation said there was very little activity around LBP on Wednesday and Thursday last week.

On the other hand, the sales gap between Gears and LBP is huge. Gears sold about four times the copies that LBP did. After that the other SKUs in the individual chart are pretty close together.

It's going to be interesting to see how each game fares in the coming weeks. Is Gears going to stay top? Is LBP a slow burner that will continue to sell?

Hahaha I knew it! Little big flop just cannot compete again as I said only simpletons will want this game or those with a brain of a 5yo.

Real gamers want games like Gears not crap like Little big s**t!

Oh and Fallout 3 is f**king awesome imo much better than gears!

Anyway I've been playing Little Big Planet and think it's awesome. I'm amazed there has been hardly any advertising for it. This surely hasn't helped its sales. What are Sony playing at. Anyone who picks up the joypad to play this cant help but smile. It has the charm of a Nintendo game.

Why can't you face facts? I knew that LBP would be a flop and it is like all games on the PS3.

ok, so.

1. You have to have the brain of a 5 year old? for a game thats about creativity, and building your own levels. which is certainly not something anyone can do. I'd like to see you try, but alas you cant pick a first person perspective in LBP.

2. GOW is about shooting things. being a knucklehead that goes around shooting things. wow. thats intelligence. It's even compared to a videogame version of big blockbuster movies, something that people often say "check your brain in at the door" for.

3. Since when has any chart of ANY kind, been a seal of great quality. shall we look at the music charts? anyone remember Doop? anyone?

§ stares blankly at SS4 §

sigh.

Well I see the usual crap games take the top spot again...

And I see that SS4 has been talking out of his arse again.

So...anyone else who wants to state pseudo-hardcore gamers don't exist...SS4 is like a walking book of written evidence.

Listen you f**king cretin, you can go cut holes in people and monsters with chainsaws all you like (bastards tarnishing DeVotchka..), I will sit in happily in my 'dick-free' zone with LBP. While you're becoming more and more like a man trying to plug his own arse up with his penis I will sit and play something original. Take your smug sales war and stuff it up your ass along with your admittedly-wow-loads-of-other-dicks-like-your-dick-I'm-impressed-dick because I coudln't care less (though you boil me like noone else) becuase I am glad LBP hasn't all the sales in the world; it'll mean less perfect c**ts like you filling up LBP's servers with drollish typical s**te.

FALLOUT 3? I have watched it on the ps3 - and I don't have a complaint about the craphics; one slightly more polished turd beside another doesn't give too much room for comparison - Fallout 3, something bugged me while I was watching it; the character running around with the gun was shooting all these big scary-looking monsters but the bloody things didn't make a sound! all the monsters; the levels I seen; the atmosphere was completely lacking - there wasn't one. All you could hear was a slight fart-like nosie of a flamethrower and footsteps; nothing else and there was a lot going on (Pipes dripping water, monsters screaming to death...) I expect to not want to hear the sound of gut wrenching screams coming from their burning voice box, not to wish, at least, they made a little noise.

Gears of War 2 may be amazing, but your f**king pathetic grovelling beneath the alter-that-is turns my stomach; I wish I could ban you; I wish I could comment on this website easily, but I can't, because I hate you and hate commenting near you; I wish, above all else, that you would accidentally fall on a chainsaw while it is turned on and tear yourself apart.

Jesus, jesus f**king christ...

Okay, so because LBP debuts at No. 4 that means its a flop? So what's that make Fable 2, that has dissapeared out of the top 10 altogether?

And like all games on PS3? Last I heard the amazing MGS4 was a massive success.
SuperSaiyan4 11 Nov 2008 12:07

Yes yes MGS 4 was a success kind of...Didn't do very well in its first week of sales but then again the PS3 is lagging behind this gen in sales.

Kind of? Konami's recent report would state otherwise...

And while the PS3 is behing in sales, its not lagging. Its already outsold the 360 in Europe, Nintendo kindly confirmed that last week. Face it, the PS3 is catching up to your precious 360, and you know as well as I do that it will overtake it and finish this Gen ahead of it, but your too much of a fanboy to admit it.

KERCHING!
I don't think I've seen any LBP traditional promotion (i.e. TV, print, billboard, radio) aside from the occasional bit of lifestyle editorial. It certainly hasn't had the hundreds of thousands (possibly millions) of ad dollars spent on Gears2. Same goes for any number of PS3 exclusives - anyone seen any traditional marketing for Resistance 2 yet? It's only a couple of weeks away!

It's high time SCEE marketing took its head out of its arse and got back to basics - "spend money to make money". The PlayStation got where it was through savvy marketing, hooking in the people that became the "PlayStation Generation". Sunsequent mentalist marketing like "The Third Place" and "This is Living" - neither which had anything to do with PS' core games market, - have done more to erode the PlayStation's standing than any amount of marketing from Microsoft or Nintendo.

I'll sidestep the wonderful personal insults that you have left yourself open to and dive right in to the facts.

LBP hasn't flopped, it was the 2nd best selling individual game in its launch week.

LBP has already outsold the following games on lifetime sales; Quantum of Solace on PS3, QoS 360, Midnight Club: Los Angeles on PS3, MC:LA 360, Fallout 3 on PS3, Fallout 3 on PC, C&C: Red Alert 3 and every version of Smackdown V Raw 2009.

Not bad for a "flop" that'd only been on sale for four days.

Not trying to take anything away from Gears, like I said it was always going to sell more, but LBP isn't the disaster you'd like to paint it as.

I saw Quantum of Solace last Thursday (great film BTW), and when they were advertising all the stuff at the beginning I saw a Gears 2 ad, NFS: Undercover (advertising the 360 version), BioShock (sorry SS4, no mention of the 360 version) and then at the end there was about a minute long ad of LittleBigPlanet. It was a great ad, but I actually thought at the time 'why don't I see it advertised on the TV?'. I see Fallout 3 on TV. I see God only knows how many Wii and DS ads, and more than enough 360 ads, but as far as PS3 goes... nothing!

And frankly, the 'This is Living' stuff is a joke. The PSOne had the great 'Do not underestimate the power of PlayStation', PS2 had 'The Third Place' (which was great) until they replaced it with 'Fun, Anyone?', which was a farce. PSP advertising was practically non-existant and PS3 ads are a joke. Sony needs a new marketing department. These people couldn't organise a piss-up in a brewery.

Mate, the thin line between 'amusingly provocative' or 'in-your-face' and 'deathly dull' and 'predictably yawnsome' has arrived. The above (and the comment on the MotorStorm dev thread) don't add anything.

Honestly, SS4, if you enjoy the SPOnG Forum - and I'm fairly sure you do - and you'd like to see it grow, then bear in mind the following:

New users have come and have gone based on what they read and feel like commenting on. I like to think that they can find more than inane, anti-console trolling here. I'm worried that when they find the standard 'that isn't on Xbox 360 and is therefore rubbish' outpourings, they simply look at it and move on. There are, after all, lots and lots of Forums on the Internet where this kind of brick-obvious trolling fits in quite nicely. I'd really like SPOnG's not to be that.

Loyal users will simply take the option not to read or contribute to threads that they feel will involve tired, trolling fare. They will return less regularly...

I also know that you're a far keener gamer and more prepared to get involved positively than you make out. So, how about taking your trolling compunction to any of the other sites and providing us here in SPOnG with your better side?

Sure, I know I'm sounding pompous - but I'm not pulling banhammers either. Just, keep in mind that we could turn this Forum into something out of the ordinary run-of-the-mill video game shout-fests if we wanted to.

Cheers and all
Tim

Tim's Pomposity Rating is 97.8. His banhammer rating is 97.7 though.
