Games luminary and
Spore creator, Will Wright, has expressed concern that the weight of hype hanging over the sim-everything title may be too much for it to take.
Asked if the buzz
Spore has created is too much, Wright said, "I think it’s too much hype. About a year ago, we were realizing how much hype we were getting and we decided we should start to say that it’s going to suck just to de-hype it. That is a certain amount of pressure.
"When people don’t know much about something, they tend to fill in the blanks the way you want them to be filled in. That’s true of almost anything. Then, when the actual thing comes out some people will be disappointed that it’s not 'hardcore enough' or it’s not 'easy enough' or that we didn’t do this or that. We’ve gotten to that point any additional hype isn’t serving us well. It’s a concern."
His comments mirror those of Rare senior programmer, Nick Burton.
Speaking to SPOnG, he said, "Because if you do that (announce a game too early) sometimes it hurts, because everyone gets preconceptions then about 'What it's going to be like this when it's finished', especially with the Internet and forums and how people discuss things endlessly. They get quite convinced 'Oh, it's definitely going to be like this.' Then they're only going to be disappointed, because they've invented probably their ideal thing."
SPOnG, for its part, imagines that the release of
Spore will be an event of celestial proportions, rendering the continuation of life in the universe moot due to its dazzling perfection. Sorry, Will...
