Sony has put a date to PlayTV, its PlayStation 3 add-on that will enable you to record digital TV.
Speaking in an interview David Reeves, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, said, "Yep, it's going to be 10th September that PlayTV comes out."
Asked if Sony plans to allow PS3 owners to play games and record TV at the same time, Reeves said, "We do, yep... It was very difficult for some of the tech guys but we had to include it in the firmware upgrade, 2.41, but it's done now." So, providing you downloaded firmware update v2.41, your PS3 is already enabled for PlayTV.
Not all the territories that fall under the SCEE umbrella will get PlayTV on September 10th, however. "We've got Australia and New Zealand also lined up for it in January or February, because on their digital terrestrial they haven't actually set the standards yet", Reeves said.
It's just as well that Reeves has given us a date for PlayTV. In America, TV and video downloads via the PlayStation Network went live
earlier in the week, but we still don't know when we will get the service over here. At least here in Europe we know when we'll be able to get
some added media functionality for our buxom PS3s.
