Rumour and speculation are already rife in the video game news-a-sphere regarding the number two plus the number two being put together in order to create... 22. Following Square Enix's announcement that the latest iteration of its revered
Final Fantasy IP will be released in the west on both Sony's PlayStation 3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360 - reports are already emerging that
Metal Gear Solid IV will be next
†.
This would not be a huge surprise given that back in December of 2005
we reported Metal Gear guru, Hideo Kojima as saying, "I want to express, first of all, it’s not that I don’t like Xbox or 360.
"...other Konami developers were able to get their hands on the 360 tools and hardware earlier. But we simply didn’t have time to do that last year.
"...So, after we finished
MGS3, the option was to work on the PS3 to try all the new things for
Metal Gear Solid 4. The only reason for this is I’m the kind of person who wants to be the first person on the moon, and don’t want to be asking 'What the moon was like?' from other people. So that’s the real story behind selecting PS3.”
He continued to point out that, "
Metal Gear Solid has traditionally been with Sony, and I still believe Sony is the best match in terms of the full complete package as a game software.
"However, for the online aspect, this is not the case. I feel no doubt that the online portion alone could be out on either PC or Xbox, maybe not Revolution (Wii), but other formats as well. The online aspect is completely different to the package that we have produced in the past on PlayStation."
Another clue
we reported on a possible move to Xbox 360 had come in June of '05, with Kojima pointing out that, "The Xbox 360 is a far more practical solution (than PS3).
"For Xbox 360, it’s a little bit more down to earth, more realistic, so people maybe can join easily to start creating on the 360."
So, all the clues are stacking up, right? In fact, in January this year it was reported on the
xboxfamily site that, "
Metal Gear Solid is coming to the Xbox 360. This is not a rumour. This is straight from a Konami distribution representative’s mouth. The game is already in production and has been since early 2007."
Seems certain now, doesn't it?
Except, more recently (January in fact) a Kojima representative apparently told
thegamereview site that, "For the record,
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is a PlayStation 3 exclusive and there are no plans to develop an Xbox 360 version of the game."
Whoops. All over then,
until it is reported in June that "..the original Metal Gear Solid will make its way onto Xbox Live", thus opening channels between Microsoft and Kojima Productions.
Has anybody seen
Metal Gear Solid on Xbox Live yet? Nope.
All that history not only gives you the chance to get at least some sense of the turmoil out here on the Interweb but also to arm yourself with a sense of perspective when it comes to the next round. So, is
MGS4 coming to the Xbox 360? Even armed with all this history we still can't say one way or another - and until Konami and Kojima Productions give the definitive answer, we'd be stunned if anybody else was able to announce it. We would, however, predict that if it was coming in the next six months, someone at Microsoft would have remembered to say something yesterday.
Before we leave this one, we also thought that it might be a good time to check some of the clues in the
FFXIII-to-Xbox 360 journey. Here's one whopping clue straight from the mouth of Square Enix's president Mr Wada:
"The Wii is the antithesis of the Xbox 360. It's strictly for hardcore gamers. The attachment rate for the Xbox 360 is much higher than for the Wii. People who buy the 360 really like games... I think the current trend is that most people aren't buying the Wii as a game machine, but as a toy... It seems that Sony isn't sure what it wants to do. Is it making high-end electronics or a game console for gamers? I want them to clearly define their console."
