Konami has said that sales of
Metal Gear Solid 4 topped one million in its first week of sale "in Europe" - just what constitutes 'Europe' isn't defined.
Well, Konami says "sales", but it would appear that what the publisher actually means is "shipments", with it telling us "Konami has shipped over one million copies of the game to retailers across Europe to meet the exceptional demand".
The last time Sony dished up hardware figures for Europe, it was Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's president, David Reeves, telling us that five million PS3s had been sold
back in May. That means that roughly one copy of
MGS4 has been shipped for every five PS3s.
Konami also states that all 25,000 limited edition
MGS4 limited edition packages were bought.
It's not bad going. It doesn't appear to come too close to
GTA IV, however. Rockstar's game
sold 927,000 copies in the UK alone in its first week. Of those, 413,000 were for the PS3.
Halo 3 sold around 466,000 copies in the UK alone in its first week.
Konami also provides us with the ambiguous statement that
MGS4 succeeded in, "securing the Number One position in the relevant sales charts." What counts as "relevant", well the European regions that weren't stated.
SPOnG's pretty sure that if we produced a game that topped the 'All Formats Chart for Being in Mark SPOnG's House and Currently Sitting Next to his George Foreman Grill in the Kitchen' we would consider that a "relevant" chart.
Hard data from Konami or not,
MGS4 did succeed in
topping the UK Charts in its first week of sale, although it didn't fare quite so well
this week.
