Funcom has claimed that its recently released MMO,
Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures, has had the biggest MMO launch since
World of Warcraft.
"Sales data shows that
Age of Conan is the biggest MMO launch since
World of Warcraft", says Funcom's VP of sales and marketing, Morten Larssen. "The numbers are very promising, and we are very proud to be one of the fastest selling PC games ever in a launch month and the biggest simultaneous Europe/US MMO launch in history."
A big claim indeed. Unfortunately, no hard data has been provided to prove that. Funcom has said that
Age of Conan “
will pass the astounding 'One Million Copies Shipped' milestone, in less than three weeks after the launch of the game” (SPOnG's emboldening). It has not, however, said exactly how many copies have currently been shipped and how many have actually sold through at retail.
That said, it would seem that sales have exceeded expectations as the publisher points out that its “retail partner” is "re-supplying retail boxes (of the game) rapidly".
Funcom also makes the loose claim that, “
Age of Conan has for the past few weeks been claiming number one spots on the sales charts across the western world – including the US, Germany, France and the UK”. Funcom obviously isn't talking about All Formats Charts, since over here the game
débuted at Number 2 and then slipped down to Number 16. It has sat proudly atop the PC Charts for two weeks now, however.
At launch,
WoW sold 240,000 copies in its first day in North America.
SPOnG recently caught up with
Conan quest coordinator, Andreas Öjerfors, for a chat. You can see it
