Bob Downe: Kitch, Camp and Ironic. Activision, take note.
We're English, we invented irony (well, we got it from the French and improved it) - this gives us excellent IronyVision. Some of us have also worked in Sydney's Darlinghurst region, giving us highly toned GayDar and Kitch'o'Scope.
However, it appears that in recent hours we've grown rusty. We know that there has to be something ironic, kitsch and camp in the advert for Guitar Hero: On Tour for the DS below. We know this must be true. But, well, we can't really see it.
That said, we are not the North American target audience for this slab of utter toe-curling hideousness. Maybe we're not supposed to get it. Maybe there will be a new advert for the European market featuring members of the Kaiser Chiefs wearing flat caps and smoking whippets while playing ukuleles.
On the upside, sources close to us, however, assure us that the creepy singer is not the same voice that produced the execrably bad theme tune to Star Trek Enterprise.
So, here's why we think the advert was produced:
1) Activision and partners said, "Sod it, the franchise will sell anyway, let Bobby Kotick direct!"
2) Activision and partners said, "Sod it, we're screwed by Rock Band, let that kid from Bobby Kotick's kid's school direct!"
3) Electronic Arts and MTV's Rock Band team managed to bribe the adverts production team.
Your thoughts to the Forum please.
Finally, we would like to offer an apology to Colonel John Antal and his Parisian 'Oraah!' antics at Ubidays. It now appears that his Marine Corps- inspired tub-thumping and use of a WWII veteran's tale to sell a video game was not as outlandish as we had previously thought... not in comparison to what is below.
I have said Spong that you guys have turned a little too cynical in your old age and here is the proof. Well, maybe :-)
I guess the question is, how boring would this video have been had it NOT been presented this way? They've managed to get a lot of information across in a short time - I now know everything I wanted to about the game - and they did it in a way that was amusing, intentionally or otherwise...
Anyhoo, I liked it. I'm just not sure what that says about me? (goes back to watching Thundercats...)
