Police: GTA a Training Ground for Crime

Canadians start to get worried...

Here we go again. Somewhere in the world right now, some bureaucrat is stating that video games (and specifically Grand Theft Auto IV) is going to lead to crime and possibly the end of civilisation as we know it.

This time around it's Calgary Police Service spokesman, Kevin Brookwell, quoted in Canada's The Calgary Sun newspaper. Ready for some more misinformed old tosh from somebody in need of a bit of PR?

"From the Calgary Police Service perspective, we see these types of video games as a grave concern," says Brookwell. These 'types of games', eh Kevin?

"Because of the lack of consequences and even reward, (youth) don't understand the impact violence can have", please, someone stop him talking. It hurts. But no, the king-hit, grand-slam piece of mass hysteria-inducing nonsense is coming at you...

..."In some cases, those very games may be training grounds for people to commit criminal activity"!

Thanks Kevin - let's face it, blaming 'those kind of video games' for crime is certainly better than looking at real issues.

We spoke to Mark SPOnG - a man who has spent considerable amounts of his life sliding around Canada on a plank. Mark told us, "While I'm disappointed with the Calgary police force's narrow-minded and ill-informed attitude towards video games, the vast majority of Albertans are intelligent, sensible individuals. They should not be tarred with the same brush as one member of the Calgary police. Isn't there a bear Keith, erm, Ken, erm, Kevin should be shooting out of a tree somewhere?"

Thank you, Mark.

violent games have been around for years and years its only now since games are starting to look much more realistic that people and governments are getting more cautious and concerned.

I mean soon they might has 20yo or older stickers on violent games along with medical checks and background history checks before you can buy such games...

No surprise here, Just another ill informed non gamer worrying about nothing we haven't seen in films for donkey years.

That's a very big MAYBE there. What he's saying is he has no proof and its all hearsay. And I thought police needed clear and tangible evidence before saying such stuff.

The realism in games was always coming, and its bizarre how its always those that don't play games that worry so much. I really think its more of a case of many people like this guy, are out of touch with the culture of games and feel threatened by them.

Training to become criminal? Perhaps he should actually play the game before claiming such crap. And he doesn't get you can also be a cop too, amongst other side order professions, but again, if he played it, he'd know that.

I've said it before so many times but i can't believe that still people believe video games are behind crime. I can just image Bin Laden made the Taliban violent by giving them all a copy of GTA to play, seriously.

Many times now scientists have said it cannot change your mental perpective to do something that you would not normally do anyway. Not to mention, it has already been mentioned, but films are even more realistic and they do not get blamed yet if a kid is watching wrestling and they say don't do it at home, they are more than likely going to slam their mates head into the ground. Even though we know wrestling is fake (WWE for instance) that is real compared to what its like in video games.

Video games are based basically on fantasy as you cannot do anything you play on a game (apart from sports games).

Right. And when i turn on the web browser and go on youtube. I find countless videos of corrupt cops abusing the system. I see hundreds of videos exposing the failure that is america today.

such as america's leaders denying torture, and then admitting to it, then denying it once again

The countless corrupt cops that plant drugs on people to get the ability to arrest a black man.

Countless police beatings that are unjustified and unwarranted.

Just right now there is a BIG story about police officers who killed a 23 year old unarmed black man the day before his wedding. When he was leaving the strip club from his bachelor party,

Of course the only reason the judge threw out the case is because he "found the witness's story did not make sense"

And the police coordinated their stories all perfectly, like all rotten cops do. And get off the hook.

While the UNARMED black man was shot and killed by 30 bullets (yes 30 , they counted) is dead and will not come back ever again.

Good job law enforcement. Does that mean the police officer played GTA3 as well?

I am tired of law enforcement getting respect when half of them are lazy piece of s**ts abusing the system.

How many times do you watch people being arrested or fined for some bullshit stuff.

i think people should go and buy Bowling for Columbine as it has a lovely bit about all kinds of thing that this relates to personally i feel that there is nothing wrong with mature games as it is in the human nature to be violent and people find ways to do it eg some go out on a week end and shoot people with paint some people go and fight with gloves on some people play computer games
