Mainichi News has reported that the PlayStation 2 price slash expected by many to be announced at E3 next week will not be happening.
For several months Sony insiders have hinted that the company was planning to distract attention away from its competitors by announcing a $50 / £50 cut in the retail price of the PlayStation 2 at next week’s E3 in Los Angeles.
It is now looking like the price will remain fixed at the £300/$300 mark until either the Xbox or GameCube is launched. At this point, Sony Computer Entertainment will drop the price by a massive $100 / £100, probably one or two weeks before either competitors’ console hits the marketplace.
We would rather see a best of both worlds scenario, which would entail SCE dropping the price by $50 / £50 at E3 and another fifty before the other machines enter the fray.
