Guitar Hero to get New Features on Wii?

Just maybe...

Guitar Hero III creator, RedOctane, are looking even more closely at extending the franchise's capabilities on the Wii.

As part of an interview with RedOctane co-founders Kai and Charles Huang, Forbes reports,

”The brothers say they’ll also stretch the game’s capabilities on the Nintendo Wii console. Although "Guitar Hero III" is already available on the Wii, the capabilities of the console’s unique motion-sensitive controller could allow RedOctane to dramatically alter the gaming experience. The Huangs are closely studying the Wii because the platform attracts players who want the added social benefit of playing with other people.”

The Wii version of Guitar Hero III already requires players to insert the Wii Remote into the peripheral, utilising its rumble capabilities and putting the microphone to work for the game's 'squelch' effect when you miss a note. Star power - which is activated by moving the guitar - is triggered by the Wii Remote's motion sensitivity, so RedOctane has already played with that. What could be next?

Well, with the multi-instrumentation of MTV/Harmonix/EA's competing Rockband taking the innovative edge over Guitar Hero's solidly guitar-only traditionalism, Red Octane has certainly got to deal with more than just axe grinding.

So, expect more Wii musical peripherals.

Charles also boasted about the game's following in the music industry, stating, "A lot of artists love Guitar Hero. Country band, Rascal Flats, they play Guitar Hero, all the way down to teen sensations, like Miley Cyrus. … So in terms of music categories, Guitar Hero can expand in so many different directions."

Meanwhile, Kai wasn't shy about trumpeting Guitar Hero's accomplishments, saying, "Being the gold standard, we define the genre, we focus on making our games accessible and easy to play, and we define that social gaming experience."

If only everything was going so well on the legal front...
