As comics insiders have known for some time thanks to the Diamond Comics catalogue, Electronic Arts'
Dead Space is migrating to comics with a helping hand from indie publisher, Image. EA has just made the announcement, telling us that the first issue will be out on March 3rd (or March 4th in the UK).
The six issue series will be written by up and coming writer Antony Johnston, best known for his post-apocalyptic series,
Wasteland. Meanwhile, rising superstar Ben Templesmith, who also works on
Fell with Warren Ellis and co-created
30 Days of Night, will handle art chores.
“The world of
Dead Space has such a deep storyline that it’s easily adaptable to other mediums”, said Executive Producer of
Dead Space, Glen Schofield. “We love the fact our story is being told across multiple forms of media, providing different experiences to different audiences, which all lead to the same dark place.”
Glen Schofield. Remember him? He's the chap that talked EA into knots when he said, "We're not going to gimp the 360 because the PS3 can't do it. We're going to optimise the crap out of it and make the PS3 really good, sort of like
Burnout."
† SPOnG was later told by Schofield, "We are having no problems in developing
Dead Space across different platforms."
Anyway, back to the comic. Images' blurb (technically, a 'solicitation' as it's called in Comicland... but that sounds too much like dealing with a whore or a lawyer to us), taken from Diamond Comics, catalogue for the first issue tells us:
"Real Space. Real Terror.
From the creative minds at video game colossus Electronic Arts comes Dead Space, an all-new horror series set in the terrifying reaches of outer space. Illustrated by top-tier talent Ben Templesmith (30 Days of Night), and written by Anthony Johnston (Wasteland), DEAD SPACE tells the gut-wrenching tale of a deep space mining colony that unexpectedly pulls an ancient and vicious alien life force from the dark rock. DEAD SPACE will be the prequel to EA's upcoming survival horror game of the same name, due in 2008. You don't want to miss out on this unparalleled collaboration!"
EA has provided one of the covers for the first issue. Because SPOnG loves you, we've fished out the other cover for issue #1 and the cover for issue #2, as well. You can find out more about
Dead Space on SPOnG's
dedicated game page.
