EA: PS3 To Outsell Xbox 360 This Year
In a supplement to its recent financial report, Electronic Arts has released its internal estimates for console sales through 2008 in North America and Europe. While it expects North America to be tied between the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, the third-party publisher expects the PS3 to substantially outperform the 360 in Europe.

According to EA's estimates, Sony will shift between 4.5 and 5.5 million consoles in North America and 5 to 6 million PS3s in Europe. That's a total of 9.5 to11.5 million PS3s in the western world.

EA expects the 360 to also sell 4.5 to 5.5 million units in North America, but as few 1.5 - 2.5 million units in Europe. That's just 6 - 8 million in total.

Although the publishing giant has not released estimates for Japan, it's a pretty safe bet that the PS3 will continue to outsell the 360 in Japan by a significant margin. Therefore, if EA's figures for North America and Europe prove accurate, we'll be looking at the PS3 outperforming the 360 worldwide this year.

The company doesn't see the Wii's sales slowing down, predicting Nintendo’s system will outsell both the 360 and the PS3. It predicts sales of between 5.5 and 6.5 million in North America and 6.5 to 7.5 million in Europe. That's a total of 12 - 14 million sales.

EA also sees the DS outselling the PSP by around two to one in 2008. It estimates total sales of the PSP in Europe and North America to range between 6 and 8 million, while it predicts sales of 14 - 16 million for the DS.

EA's John Ricitiello recently came out and said development for the PS3 can still be problematic, unless it decides to develop for Sony's console first, that is. Looking at these predictions, it's unlikely that EA is going to be worrying too much if the PS3 does take longer to develop for...

Meanwhile, Sony recently revealed that its total global hardware sales were at 10.49 million units as of the end of 2007, while it dropped its sales target for the fiscal year running to March 31st 2008.

You can see EA's figures in full here.

I am surprised by those 360 Figures for Europe. I believed the PS3 would "win" overall this generation, but I thought it would take longer and be closer in Europe.

The PS3 has no chance, the ONLY way for the PS3 to overtake 360 sales would be for one of the following to happen:

1) Xbox 360 starts losing exclusives

2) Xbox 360 stops selling selling

3) PS3 suddenly starts selling millions a month

I dont see any of that happening therefore as long as the 360 is still selling millions and is clearly around 8million ahead or more against the PS3 the PS3 this gen will be last.

Wii will probably stay 1st place for a long time and the 360 second.

I have a prediction...

EA will continue to make crap games and start to suffer further loses meaning EA will have to start considering to actually make games that are enjoyable and have no issues and not have their own s**tty servers.

What a complete load of garbage… it’s like saying that the new 2008 BMW is outselling the 2004 Mercedes, when Mercedes has already sold XX million of them since it’s release… what an absolutely ridiculous piece of news.

It's kind of predictable that you would say that.

Thing is, I don't think many people agree with you. It appears that PS3 is going to overtake 360 in total sales by the end of this year... It's going to be a lot closer than last gen was, but Sony is going to win this one too.

I am sure we will see Sony getting more desperate and perhaps releasing an even 'cheaper' PS3 which costs £199 then Sony saying 'We cut our costs by half again!' Oh the irony.

Do you even know what irony is? Clue: not something that is "a bit like iron".

Your predictions are the equivalent of a pint of bumjuice with a piss chaser. And so bastard one-sided that it's laughable. I sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo look forward to the day PS3 overtakes your beloved XBox in sales; not because I dislike the 360 but because your ridiculous statements make it hard to join a club with someone as pig-s**t thick and ill-advisedly smug as you as a member.

360 sold well because for ages it was the only choice for "next-gen" gaming. But PS3 IS catching up rapidly. Loads of people I know who have never even had a console really want to get a Blu-Ray player for their HD TVs, and PS3 appeals to them because of the things that it can do on top of that- particularly, it seems, SingStar, which seems to be getting great word of mouth as a fantastic party game (and every time I ship it to a party it stays on for 5-6 hours without a break). I've not heard a single person I know even mention HD-DVD, which seems to be failing partly because it's not branded differently enough from normal DVD... it's just not seeped into the public conscious like Blu-Ray has. And the majority of PS2 owners I know are holding out for the right PS3 deal and are not interested in 360. Heck, my cousin actually bought a 360 a couple of months ago (against my advice) and admits now he wishes he had got a PS3 so he could play Blu-Ray on his HD TV (and borrow my games no doubt), and is not interested in forking out extra for an HD-DVD add-on as he does not want to back the wrong horse. And sadly, most of the families I know who were so desperate for a Wii a few months back have stuck with the games they got at the time, and don't seem arsed about getting any more. This can't be great for the future of Wii, that will be in danger of being a fad before long.

In summary: 360, console of choice for the so-called "hardcore" who wanted to get in the next-gen early. But that time has past and there is an alternative that is catching up.
Wii, popular but many don't seem to be too fussed about it after they have played the initial games to death.
PS3, the first true "next-gen" console, is becoming the hardware of choice for many now that HD TVs are coming down in price and Blu-Ray is becoming more popular.
SuperSaiyan is blinded by blatant fanboyism and everyone will mock him/her/it for being so outrageously smug when the revolution comes.

If PS3 sales are "increasing" and 360 sales are "decreasing", if we plot this out on a graph and follow the trend, then it can be said that "PS3 sales are catching up". This expression can be interpreted a number of ways, as can the sales figures depending on if you are looking at Europe, Japan, the US, or the world. It's a combination of English, Maths, and Economics, you inbred retard.
