In a supplement to its recent financial report, Electronic Arts has released its internal estimates for console sales through 2008 in North America and Europe. While it expects North America to be tied between the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, the third-party publisher expects the PS3 to substantially outperform the 360 in Europe.
According to EA's estimates, Sony will shift between 4.5 and 5.5 million consoles in North America and 5 to 6 million PS3s in Europe. That's a total of 9.5 to11.5 million PS3s in the western world.
EA expects the 360 to also sell 4.5 to 5.5 million units in North America, but as few 1.5 - 2.5 million units in Europe. That's just 6 - 8 million in total.
Although the publishing giant has not released estimates for Japan, it's a pretty safe bet that the PS3 will continue to outsell the 360 in Japan by a significant margin. Therefore, if EA's figures for North America and Europe prove accurate, we'll be looking at the PS3 outperforming the 360 worldwide this year.
The company doesn't see the Wii's sales slowing down, predicting Nintendo’s system will outsell both the 360 and the PS3. It predicts sales of between 5.5 and 6.5 million in North America and 6.5 to 7.5 million in Europe. That's a total of 12 - 14 million sales.
EA also sees the DS outselling the PSP by around two to one in 2008. It estimates total sales of the PSP in Europe and North America to range between 6 and 8 million, while it predicts sales of 14 - 16 million for the DS.
EA's John Ricitiello recently came out and said development for the PS3 can
still be problematic, unless it decides to develop for Sony's console first, that is. Looking at these predictions, it's unlikely that EA is going to be worrying too much if the PS3 does take longer to develop for...
Meanwhile, Sony recently
revealed that its total global hardware sales were at 10.49 million units as of the end of 2007, while it dropped its sales target for the fiscal year running to March 31st 2008.
