The latest PSP firmware update, Version 3.90, is available today, bringing with it Skype functionality.

Additionally, an icon for Sony's other piece of PSP communications software, Go!Messenger, will appear on your handheld. That doesn't mean, however, that Go!Messenger is up and running. What it does mean is that users will be able to get more information on the service by clicking on the icon and getting whisked away to a dedicated website. Oh - and it "emphasises its impending arrival", according to Sony.

So, as soon as you've got the update installed and grabbed yourself a headset, you'll be able to chat with over 200 million other Skype users worldwide, as well as make paid for calls to old-fashioned mobile and landline phones.

Unfortunately, owners of the original PSP won't be able to get hold of Skype. The original's smaller memory means that only owners of the Slim & Lite will be able to get the service. Go!Messenger, however, will be available to all PSP owners.

Go!Messenger, we're told, will be available at the end of February, adding video calling and "numerous other features" to the communications functionality of the PSP.

Skype for the PSP was meant to hit Japan last week, but was delayed by Sony the day before release. The reason? The microphone packs the company intends to release over there weren't up to scratch.

Seems pretty cool, so hopefully the mic is wireless and you dont have to hold the PSP to your ear to make calls lol.

But how does the PSP actually make calls wirelessly to other phones? Does it hook up to a satellite or something?

Skype works over the internet. So your PSP will need to be near a wi-fi hotspot. Good function, but not ideal. Best for cheap calls at home I suspect. Certainly no use for making calls from your car, for example. Unless you are crazy rich and have wireless internet in your car.

Such a missed oppurtunity by Sony once again. Unfortunately, the majority of us have the original PSP, because we put our good faith in it. To not support it with Skype is just wrong.

I hope they'll be working on fixing this. I'll clearly indulge in Skype and praise Sony if they do fix this.
