Apple iPod Gets Namco Classic

Pole Position: Remix revealed

Posted by Staff
Namco Networks, the mobile devices subsidiary of Namco-Bandai, has unveiled a new iteration of its retro racing classic, Pole Position II, for the iPod under the suitably... er, funky name Pole Position: Remix.

Derived from Pole Position II - originally released on the Atari 7800 (25 years ago this year!) - the game puts players behind the iPod wheel to control a 3D car as it careens around a race track. Namco tells us it has overhauled the game-play, graphics and soundtrack as well as brought in a brand-spanking new course for the iPod.

Other iPod-specific features include the ability to play your own music as you go and get your album artwork randomly displayed on billboards as you bez around the tracks.

"Pole Position: Remix takes the classic game play of one of Namco's most popular racing series and combines it with new themes, designs and more integrated game play", said Scott Rubin, Namco Networks' VP of sales and marketing. "The iPod Click Wheel is a perfect control pad for steering in a racing game and the device's portability gives consumers access to this quality game experience anywhere, anytime." What a spontaneous-sounding guy!

The game joins Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man on Namco's list of titles available for the iPod - or fifth generation players, anyway.

Pole Position: Remix is available now for iPod nano with video, iPod classic and the fifth generation iPod.

Well, at least the iPod is finally getting games more advanced than Tetris and Bejeweled, right?
