EVE Online Gets Massively Steamy

Steam gets first MMO

Crowd Control Productions and Valve have announced that EVE Online, CCP's sci-fi massively multiplayer online game, will be made available through Valve's PC gaming portal, Steam.

This will be the first time an MMO has been made available on Steam. The two companies seem pretty chuffed about this, so they are offering a free 21 day trial of the game to Steam users. Additionally, Steam gamers will receive a $5 (£2.55) discount on their first full month using EVE Online.

"Launching EVE on Steam means the addition of another fantastic PC game and the introduction of MMOs on Steam", said Valve's director of business development, Jason Holtman. "The team at CCP continues to expand EVE's universe and gameplay for the legions logging in to play each month, just as we continue to expand Steam's consumer and developer features."

Unsurprisingly, CCP had something to say on the subject, too. "We are immensely excited and honored that EVE Online will be the first MMO on Steam", said Magnus Bergsson, VP of Sales at CCP. "Steam has been the leading online distribution platform for a long time and home to some of the most dedicated gamers around, so we couldn´t think of a better fit for EVE Online."

EVE Online has been knocking about for a while now, having first launched back in 2003. Fortunately, CCP keeps abreast of its age with free expansions – the latest of which introduced a graphical overhaul “of gargantuan proportions” in CCP's words. You can find out more about it here.

Valve's been busy of late. The company recently announced the introduction of Rockstar's back catalogue to its line-up and snapped up Turtle Rock Studios, the dev behind Left 4 Dead.
