We love the Wii's Virtual Console because it gives the two factions of the SPOnG office something to share and enjoy. The ancient SPOnGers can revel in nostalgia, explain why, "games were the important thing back then" and then gently nod off. The younger SPOnGers can then actually get on and play the classic games and actually have some fun. Neat.
This week we are treated to two 1990s treats, starting with Nintendo's very own 1
080°: TenEighty Snowboarding (1999 release for the UK on N64). We've already given our overview of this game on
our dedicated page, saying in part:
"One of Nintendo’s greatest attributes is the ability to improve on other people's weaknesses.
1080 Snowboarding is everything
Cool Boarders on PlayStation should have been. Great graphics, great courses (not tracks), great motion capture; the list goes on."
Nintendo wants to add to the description that there are in fact, "...six huge courses to explore and all loaded with the perfect places to pull more than 25 stunning stunts and tricks, fans will be pulling off spins and grabs in no time as they head down the slopes. With six different modes available ranging from head-to-head races to Time Attack modes and places to practice your skills..."
1080 Snowboarding can be downloaded for 1,000 Wii Points.
Don't like healthy outdoor exercise? Prefer your life to be a violently urban thrill ride? Fancy New York and a "TurboDuo (TurboGrafx) arcade-style beat ‘em up"? Then you will fancy
Riot Zone! (AKA
Crest of Wolf).
This is because you get to 'battle your way through the streets of New York as vigilantes Hawk and Tony and take on the henchmen that try and stand in your way".
Tony and Hawk? Yeah! This 1993 Hudsonsoft was a single-player-only outing that sort of impinged SEGA's
Streets of Rage area. To be honest, we don't remember great things about it... but that's not to say that for 800 Wii Points, the young people might not want to give it a go.
There are now 182 Virtual Console titles available in Europe.
