No Online for Wii Worms: A Space Oddity

Social gaming in the good old sense of social

No Online for Wii Worms: A Space Oddity
Back in August of 2007 we were all getting excited about the next - the Wii - incarnation of Team17's much-loved Worms franchise. Yes, Worms: A Space Oddity was due this very year.

It was also, according to the press release to include online play:

"The online multiplayer experience pits up to four Worms fiends from all over the world against each other."

Now, however, Shacknews reports publisher THQ's confirmation that there will, in fact, be no such online functionality. THQ has said:

"Worms: A Space Oddity is a social gaming experience that is best enjoyed locally, in a party-game atmosphere with other players.

"We've chosen to focus on making the best possible local multiplayer experience through fast-paced gameplay and entertaining party-games. Players will get even more fun and satisfaction from being able to see the reaction of their friends and taunting them with attacks face-to-face."

Now, we already know that other Worms games on other platforms already offer online play - and have done for more years that anybody cares to remember: Worms Open Warfare - for example - proved that beyond doubt. Worms on XBLA is also a standout.

We, and we can't be alone, were really looking forward to some Wii Wormage, and THQ's PR patch-up can't seriously cover up the wider issue: the Wii is seriously unrepresented in terms of online, multi-player gaming right now.

We are doing our best, of course, to discover whether this can of Worms is down to timing issues, a technical problem or simply commercial pressures.

It's very disappointing, to be sure. I wouldn't mind there not being any downloadable content, but I got quite excited at the idea of online matches, even against random, un-named opponents.

As it stands, I think I'd only be likely to pick this up as a budget title, now.

Oh, and "entertaining party-games"? How patronising. I'm getting sick of every stupid game for the Wii proclaiming it has great multiplayer, simply because they've tacked on some terrible mini games. And I used to be a fan of mini games, too.

Its funny the Wii has some nice kit in its small box including the Wi-Fi that is built in but the USB ports that dont seem to support any devices other than chargind stands??

The DS Lite can go online and you can play games with other people and hear them and talk to them! Yet the Wii is unable to offer this? Along with the fact that the Wii friends code is and was a really silly idea.

I dont think the Wii was ever meant to be an online socialising experience but more of a stand alone system - like the good old days when your mates would come around on your Mega Drive/Snes and play co-op or take turns.

That's probably quite fair anyway; there's no way most gamers would spend the time inputting a million numbers per game (and in fact per console) in the first place. Not having an online mode does suck naturally, but Nintendo have made it pointlessly hard to implement so why should dev's bother?

Most of Burnout's races were on circuits. So the minute you finish one, you're back at the start. So why do you need a retry option? Unless you are one of those mewling wimps that cancel/retry as soon as the fall from the lead.

Metroid has always been a single-player game about being alone on a planet...where does the multiplayer aspect of the series come from?
