Sega of Japan has partially removed the gag it tied around Yu Suzuki and his team regarding the upcoming blockbuster Shenmue 2. This time, the team has been allowed to say a bit more than “Erm, it will feature a girl with red hair,” which, quite frankly, is no good to anyone.
The first revelation is the size of the new game. Sega reports that the final version of Shenmue 2 will be around three to four times the size of the original, which, if you remember, spans four GD’s.
Also revealed was Ryo’s new occupation. In Shenmue Ryo worked his ass off as a forklift truck operator, complete with a race every morning. In Hong Kong, the new setting for Shenmue 2, Ryo will work as a pawn shop assistant. Can you imagine the conversation with Sega of America when this was announced?
SOJ: “Yes, Ryo will have a new job in the sequel. He will work in a pawn shop.”
SOA: “In a porn shop? Are you sure that is a wise decision?”
SOJ: “But of course! He will get to handle many interesting objects and get to know the underworld of Hong Kong. People will come in and trade items with Ryo. Many interesting and unusual things pass through an average pawn store.”
SOA: “I’m sure they do. I don’t quite see why a porn shop is necessary though. Anyhow, I thought that was illegal in Hong Kong.” To colleague: “Hey Hank, You’re never gonna guess what the Japanese have planned for Shenmue 2!”
Comedy aside, Ryo will be able to enter into some serious trading in the new game, buying and selling anything he can get his hands on.
Sega reports Shenmue 2 is about 80% complete at the moment, with a lot of work going into minimising the load times for the sequel. The load times for in-game updates will now be twice as fast as they used to be.
Sega also said that it has included three times the amount of mini-games as was featured in Shenmue.
