Terminator Game In The Works

Arnie's back. A little bit

A new Terminator game is in the works. The game is set to coincide with the upcoming movie, Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins, scheduled for summer 2009 release.

The new holder of the Terminator rights, the Halcyon Corporation (now there is a name from Sci-Fi), is setting up its own games division to handle development of the game. Former Disney and Bellrock Media executive, Peter Levin, is heading the division, saying, "When you own the intellectual property and have the creative control, you can make sure you're publishing a top-tier video game that will satisfy the needs of the marketplace."

So, when you don't have one of those components, it's okay to knock out any old rubbish? We hope not, Peter.

The upcoming Terminator game has apparently been in development for several months. Derek Anderson, one of the co-chair-people ('chair-people' a hideous cross-breed of furniture and man!) of the gaming division, said, "We don't want the game to be the stepchild to the film. They're of equal importance, and we want both to be of the same quality and be the same compelling experience."

The film will be set after the events of Terminator 3, focusing on the war between man and machine. Arnie is said to be making a cameo for all of about 30 seconds of the film, so it's unlikely we'll see too much of him in the game. Governing California and trying to look like you're supporting a dead-duck president without being seen anywhere near that same president apparently puts a bit of a dent in your schedule it would seem.

The film also comes sans series creator James Cameron, so just how good it will be remains very much up for grabs. That said, a big ol' war between man and machine sounds like good gaming to SPOnG - and doing it without the man who brought us Titanic can't be a bad thing either.

Halcyon games also has one more trick up its sleeve. The company has bagged rights to the works of sci-fi giant genius Philip K Dick, and plans to begin releasing games based on his books in 2010. Oh yes. SPOnG's hoping for an adaptation of Dick's 1975 classic, Confessions of a Crap Artist.

This has potential. Why?

Because if you think of all those films like Aliens etc, where all we wanted to see and do is go toe to toe with the enemy, most of them not delivering a good experience.

I'd love to see a Rainbow Six/Gears style tactical assault game, where you can co-ordinate the resistance fighters on various fronts. Take this baby online to multiplayer and we can all take part in bringing down Skynet.

Aliens?

Alien Ressurection on the PS1 was one of the most atmospheric games ever.
