Populous DS - First Images And Information

Can it destroy our lives?

Posted by Staff
The first information and images about Electronic Arts' mysterious new entry into the Populous series have emerged, courtesy of Japanese gaming bible Famitsu. Yes, Populous DS is on the horizon.

Details, alas, are still on the scant side, but here's what we know: firstly, the game will feature four modes; Challenge, Free Play, VS (for up to four players) and Gallery. Instead of just opting for using the touchscreen (which would have been a fairly obvious choice, given the style of game) EA is also including pad controls. Many of the old maps (such as Jidaigeki and Persian) you remember from playing Populous back in the good old days when games still came on floppy disks will be included. And don't forget the miracles - perform one and you get to see a movie of it. Most gods we know simply are not that technically advanced.

SPOnG remembers many a happy hour spent sucked into the Amiga version of Populous, to much cursing and screaming from friends, families, and partners who, for some reason, wanted to spend time with us. Fingers crossed this new version will destroy our personal lives with similar flair.

Ah, I remember Populous. It's that game where you can move the ground up and down to flatten the level out to the exact shape required to build your village, then you kick your enemies ass, then you win the level.

Then on the next level, the only difference being the initial shape of the terrain, you just re-shape it to exactly what you want making every level exactly the same. Bored after 2 minutes - and they hail Peter Molyneux as some sort of design god. He designed the same bloody game 10 times over!

Anyone remember Mega Lo Mania? Tell me that there's a pixel perfect conversion of that coming to the DS and then I'll get excited. Anyone wanna sort out hacking the original source to get the algorithms and data out and I'll have a go at coding it?
