Cosmic Smash Too simplistic for European gamers

We don't care if it looks simplistic, if it plays well.

Cosmic Smash Too simplistic for European gamers
Sega of Japan has announced that it will porting its Naomi arcade hit Cosmic Smash to Dreamcast this year. Good news, we are sure you will agree.

Annoyingly, the game will not be released in Europe, ever. Our Sega insider told us, “For some reason, Sega of Japan has instructed Sega Europe not to expect to see a release of Cosmic Smash“ he said. “We were told that the game performed poorly in European arcades and the Japanese office believes that the game is too simplistic in appearance. They seem to think that European gamers are more interested in all singing all dancing games rather than a game that is, essentially, a remake of Pong but against a wall.”

Cosmic smash was the next game to be produced by the team behind the astounding Virtua Tennis. They obviously decided that multiplayer bat and ball games are where it’s at.

“Sega of Japan see the life expectancy of the Dreamcast in Europe to be shorter than it is in Japan,” we were told. “For this reason, the amount of time to release new games is shortened and the market share they represent is more valuable. The Japanese think it makes more sense and I would agree with them. Why dilute the market with a lot of games that have limited appeal when we can release a mainstream title that has a good chance of doing well in the all formats chart?”

We agree with Sega to some extent but we do feel a little aggrieved to be denied the chance of playing Cosmic Smash because Sega want a higher level of chart glory.
