EA To Beef Up Online Services?
Electronic Arts has acquired Super Computer International (SCI), a company that provides “client applications and software tools for the PC” - so, not that Sci. The purchase could signify a more aggressive push on EA's part into the realm of online gaming.

SCI created PlayLinc, a game browsing and messaging platform, launched by AOL and Verizon last year, that includes tools such as instant messaging and voice chat, buddy tracking, an invitation system and team management.

EA currently runs EA Nation, its own online gaming portal for its games, but the service lacks features such as voice chat, while IM is restricted to the PS2. It may be that EA intends to beef up its current offering, or the team may simply be used to ease pressure on EA's internal development teams as far as online gaming goes.

EA has yet to announce exactly what it plans to do with SCI, although it has confirmed that SCI's CEO, Jesper Jensen, will continue to lead the team.

"SCI's development expertise is uniquely suited to our online technology needs," said Nanea Reeves, EA vice president and COO for Online. "The team's technical leadership and creative approach is a great fit, and we're thrilled to have them join EA."
