Phoning In The Wii Controller

Why, gods!? Why?

Posted by Staff
While Sony and Microsoft are entrenched in some kind of rumour-fuelled war of who is going to be cheaper, Nintendo sits back quietly raking sand in its garden of reflection and cash into its banks. Then two Austrians come along and decide to disrupt the peace. They only go and develop software that enables you to play games on your phone using your Wii controller.

Alexander Erifiu and Mario Grammer (oh please!) from the University of Applied Sciences in Hagenberg, Austria are studying "Mobile Computing". They have convinced their lecturers that writing a video game that plays on phones... but has to be lined into a telly... and that can be controlled with a Wii controller is good for course credits.

Nice one lads - and we thought Austria was only notable for Adolf Hitler, Gaston Glock, some composers and a whole bunch of world-class skiers. We'll let the boys speak of their wares.

"WiiConnect is a Bluetooth-driver for S60 phones, which enables you to play games with the Nintendo Wiimote — the innovative controller of the Nintendo Wii. It allows using the exciting features of the Wiimote, including the 3D accelerometer and rumble functionality. WiiConnect enables you to play party games directly on / through your mobile phone. This guarantees fun on the move without having to pay a fortune. WiiConnect is very easy to use — activate Bluetooth on your phone, start the driver and you’re connected to the Wiimote.

WiiRider is a motorcycle game for your mobile phone. Using the Wiimote, the game guarantees to be a lot of fun. The controls simulate driving with a motorcycle on a country road. You have to hold the Wiimote like the handlebar of a motorcycle. To accelerate, you symbolically open the throttle by turning the controller. Moving left or right is equally controlled by your motion – you do not have to press any buttons to play the game.

"To make the game more challenging, you have to evade several obstacles like cows and pigs, but you should try to collect petrol cans to fill up your energy. The goal of the game is to keep up as long as possible!"

There you go. Now, you are probably thinking that this is just Austrian hilarity gone mad. Why on earth would you want to connect your phone to a television to play a game using a Wii controller? But when Nokia decides to buy the code and makes Herrs Erifiu and Mario billionaires, you'll be laughing on the other side of your face.

Still, Mario Grammer ... you couldn't make it up... or could you?

Well what do you know. There is a spiritual being out there. :)

Although technically that would make his name Mario Grammer, not Grammer Mario (the names are all surname, first name). That would actually make a good (read: rather rubbish) name for a nursery-style learning game for the PC starring Mario. Could be a download on the Wii. Or is that Mario Party 8 already? ;)

Oh my God, I have turned cynical. Someone kick me in the face.

But his name is Mario Grammer and always has been - I have not recently gone and changed it to be the correct way around prior to posting my initial comment this morning.

No way...

And [sigh] that would be Mario Grammar... you(ung) man.

Well that'll teach me to read anything while I'm still waking up. Could have sworn it was Grammer Mario. Ah well, my bad.

I know it'd be Mario Grammar, but that wouldn't nearly be as groovy. Everyone loves a bit of irony in their game titles (or maybe it's just me).
