Halo 3 Takes Xbox Division Into Profit For First Time

So say some analysts...

Posted by Staff
Halo 3 is set to generate something in the region of $170 million (£85 million) in revenue during Microsoft's first financial quarter according to analysts at bankers Goldman Sachs. The analysts predict that Microsoft will have shipped a total of 4.2 million copies of Halo 3 by the end of September.

This could mark the first foray of the Entertainment & Devices Division Xbox division, in which items such as Xbox and Zune sit, out of the red and into the world of profit. The division has yet to make a penny, since the original release of the Xbox way back earlier this century.

Watch out for more random celeb-spotting from tonight's central London Halo 3 launch shenanigans later today.

I'm a little unsure about this "into the black for the first time ever" since I'm sure that around the time of the Halo2 launch there was a profitable quarter. And he can't be talking about overall profit because $170 million in revenue isn't going to counteract $6 billion in overall losses.

Maybe the last profitable quarter was before the Entertainment & Devices Division was formed and it was just Entertainment back then?

Im also sure they were in the black at one point ni the past and im sure it was prior to zune rumors even, so it must of been the entertainment division.

What people always forget is the WHOLE division means far more to Microsoft than making money. Windows makes the money today. E&DD ensures that continues by pursuing all possible mediums of future platforms! Mobile/Xbox/Zune/Living Room/Interactive Tables...... $6billion dollar loss today = $60billion dollar profit in the future. Microsoft arent idiots! Far from it, this is all calculated.

It was the quarter when Halo 2 came out that they turned black numbers...also 6 billion loss if only you count the annual running cost of the division...you need to add the initial costs and invesment costs as well and then the total number nears 12-15 billion.

And, Microsoft aren't idiots...but their stockholders aren't also...and they want short-term profits and this division is putting pressure on the growth of their profits. Geuss what happens if the division keeps running on losses.
