Word has just come from MTV that Grammy award winners Grateful Dead have joined the line up for
Rock Band.
The hippie '60s leftovers will make 17 master recordings available for download after
Rock Band's release, including
Truckin’,
Uncle John’s Band,
Touch of Grey,
Sugar Magnolia, and
Casey Jones.
“Grateful Dead’s unique fusion of rock, folk, bluegrass, blues, and jazz challenged traditional musical boundaries and pushed the limits of creativity to produce a signature sound that is undeniably their own,” stated Paul DeGooyer, MTV's senior vice president of Audio, Home Video and Electronic Games. “With an enormous legion of fans all over the world, Rock Band will give players a chance to interact with the music of these beloved rock pioneers and experience what Grateful Dead did best - jam from the depths of their souls.”
Meanwhile, SPOnG's mind is turned back to our dear old Prime Minister Gordon Brown's decision to
investigate the effect of violence in games on youngsters. While the government's getting itself all in a tizzy about how games are corrupting the youth of today, Electronic Arts - one of the world's biggest games publisher - is putting the world's most ancient, LSD-ridden, hippy tree huggers in one of its biggest Christmas releases.
Maybe it's time to look at the broader scope of games, eh Gordon? Michael Gallagher, head of America's Entertainment Software Association
tells us, after all, that only 8% of games released are violent, 'Mature' rated titles. SPOnG's real concern is that today's youth might spontaneously start breaking into renditions of
Dark Star on the mean streets of Wolverhampton.
