In space, no one can hear you worm...

Team17's beloved real time strategy franchise, Worms, is heading to the Wii. The Wii and outer space, actually. It carries the title Worms: A Space Oddity.

As with the last few Worms games, THQ will be publishing the game. The publisher tells us that “attacks can now be launched with a wide range of gesture-based maneuvers, thanks to the Wii Remote.”

Additionally, THQ tells us, “the Wii debut will also offer the ridiculously entertaining multiplayer mayhem we all know and love.” It's about bloody time someone other than Nintendo made use of the Wii's Wi-Fi functionality as far as SPOnG's concerned.

Beyond that, not a huge amount has been said about A Space Oddity, other than that it will be out in Spring 2008.

If the game shapes up to be anything like Open Warfare 2, which launches on the DS and PSP tomorrow, SPOnG will be one very happy nerd collective. To see why, check out our preview of the handheld game here.

wonder if they make use of the Wii's controller, like having to motion to throw grenades or sheep & launch rockets.....or will it just be button presses like all the other versions of worms there has been..... i fear it will be the latter.

Reading a little closer will answer your question, Hollywooda:

I really hope that the gestures will be optional.
Mortal Kombat: Armageddon is great fun on Wii... except for the awful gesture recognition. Some games, like Tiger Woods PGA Tour, absolutely require the motion sensor. It would be a completely different, far less engaging game without it.
Others should have the motion sensing be strictly optional.
