Bioshock Publisher Steps Into Borderlands

Content generation to create “near endless variety”

Bioshock publisher, 2K Games, has announced that it will publish Borderlands, a sci-fi shooter from developer Gearbox that will feature a “groundbreaking” content generation system.

“Groundbreaking”, eh? OK, we'll bite. Apparently the system will enable “near endless variety” in missions, environments, enemies, weapons (well, 2K actually tells us there will be “hundreds of thousands” of weapons), item drops and character customisation.

"Near endless", however, is pushing a point that, had it not been Friday, we'd chase along the lines of everything is near endless. But that's just questioning marketing speak.

"Borderlands represents an important evolutionary leap in game design and technology,” said 2K's president, Christoph Hartmann. “By utilizing revolutionary new technology to create thousands of unique, randomly generated missions, weapons and situations, Borderlands will raise the bar for next-gen action games.”

2K is also touting an “extraordinary” multiplayer experience that will allow players to jump in to each other's games at any time online.

Borderlands creates a universe of gameplay that goes far beyond anything anyone would expect. We’re tapping into every bit of Gearbox Software’s experience with the biggest science fiction video game franchises, then taking everything way past the next level,” said Gearbox's president, Randy Pitchford.

“The team at 2K Games shares our passion for pushing boundaries in gameplay and storytelling and are absolutely perfect partners for Borderlands.”

Gearbox, if you're not familiar with the studio, has worked on a number of the industry's biggest franchises, including the titles Half-Life: Opposing Force, Half-Life: Blueshift, Halo: Combat Evolved and work on the Tony Hawk series.

Borderlands will be out on the PS3, 360 and PC. We've got a bit of a wait on our hands, however, with the game not due until Christmas 2008. Looks like we'll just have to tuck into 2K's BioShock demo for now.
