To celebrate the three days of something-like-summer we've had over the last few days, Nintendo's taunting us with a splash on Virtual Console this week. Wave Race 64 is now up for grabs, with Cratermaze for those who don't want to get their toes damp.

Originally released on the N64 a decade ago, Wave Race 64 pretty much does what it says on the tin. There are waves, and you race on them; on a jet ski, no less. While you're pursuing your enthusiasm for watersports you'll not only have to deal with other participants, but also dodge awkwardly placed boys... sorry, buoys, while performing tricks to earn points. Four different modes are thrown in, including two-player, stunt challenge and time trials. The summer fun is all yours for 1,000 Wii Points.

For landlubbers there is also Cratermaze, originally released on Turbographx back in 1990. Players take on the role of Opi who (bless him) has lost all his friends. Unfortunately, it's not just a case of him having had too many alcopops and telling them what he really thinks. Nope, they've been kidnapped by the maniacal Zenzombie's henchmen and now Opi's got to travel through time looking for them and gathering treasures so he can progress to the next time zone. There are 60 rounds of mazes to get through, and to defeat the nasties you'll need to dig holes to drop them in. It's all yours for 600 Wii Points.

This week's releases bump Virtual Console's total up to 125 titles.

I had Waverace on my US import N64 and it was fantastic, but wasn't the UK version plagued by screen borders and slowdown? How does the VC version play? Is it worth my (virtual) cash?
