Xbox Delight: Even More Halos On The Way
Head of Game Development for Microsoft Game Studios, Phil Spencer, speaking to SPOnG's regular contributor, Steve Boxer, has some interesting things to say regarding the future of Halo. Specifically that just because the forthcoming third in the trilogy, Halo 3 is indeed number 3, doesn't mean it's the last.

Frankly, that would be commercial suicide wouldn't it?

Here's what Phil tells our Steve as part of our interview and Halo 3 hands-on:

"It does not mean there will be no more Halos – there are tons more stories to tell in the Halo universe. But if you played Halo and Halo 2, you saw the beginning of a story, and I think it’s important to finish off that dramatic arc. We want to bring the untold stories together. One of the things I’ve always liked about Halo is that people think it’s about the story of Master Chief, and in a way it is – but I really think Halo is about the person who plays. It’s your story."

So, not only are there more coming - the first three weren't even about Master Chief in the first place... we feel so... used.

Anyway, you can check out the entire interview and latest hands-on right here.

Time travel paradox stories confirmed.

I see no other way they can expand on such a generic, uncreative storyline.

Maybe they need to sign Michael Bay...wasn't he in games nowadays?

What would be interesting is if they followed Half Life and did a sort of "Halo 3: Episode 1 - The Beginnings of Master Chief"...

Frankly I think they should give it a rest after Halo 3, try something else (bar Halo Wars). Halo was cooler when first on xbox, but the polish has dulled over time, when you look at what Bioshock, Mass Effect are doing, I find them more original and appealing.

Come on Bungie, do something totally new, or make Oni 2.

I think we should just let them do whatever they feel and judge the results. I think theres plenty of room in the Halo Universe to tell more stories and Bungie certainly has the capability to innovate...perhaps user created content could be featured in the next installment, perhaps take the focus off Master Chief...or even humanity...or maybe they want to do prequels. Its their choice, and given that there are other choices for players to make...don't reproach them before you even know what they've decided to do.

I was actually thinking a game with the player as Flood would be cool...not necessarily as a multiplayer game...

In the prequel vein, theres always the earlier stages of the war with the Covenant...Or, perhaps more interestingly the original conflict against the Flood presumably fought by the Builders. Perhaps a First Person game played from the perspective of a single Builder, without actually revealing anything about his/their appearance.

or...

They should ditch the crap storyline and dayglo aliens and focus on the multiplayer, which is by far the best thing about Halo. I never enjoyed the single player game. At all. Never looked up to Master Chief either, just another faceless goon in futuristic body armour. Give me Gordon Freeman any day of the week.

I hear what you are saying about the Master Chief, Bentley. He's a bit of a no brainer character design, that I find much harder to connect with than Mr Freeman or other FPS characters. Sure, he's a cyborg but does he actually have a head under that helmet? Its hard to connect or empathise when you can't see the eyes. I wonder if that's Bungie's intention?

Sure, there's more they can do with the storyline for games. But after so much build for this trilogy ending, and as much as many like Halo, they should stick to their word and end it, with Halo Wars. Maybe they are scared to, I don't know.

Oni 2, Myth 3..or something new, to give us a break from Halo, please.

Yes Joji, he does have a head. I hear he takes his helmet off in Halo 3. Actually I find the Master Chief's story quite compelling. There are a few novels out there that could give you more background on his story(or you could check out his wikipedia article.

Also, its an FPS, you look through his eyes not at them. Yes, he has eyes.

As to Bungie's intention, by never showing Master Chief's face, everyone is free to assume what they'd like. For the more narcissistic, you can assume he looks like you...if you have a Chuck Norris(Elvis/Flavor Flav/Ahnold) fetish feel free to imagine his features inside the helmet...

YEEEEEAAH BOYEEE!

Wow, scary thought, Master Chief with a Flavor Flav AI (Yo, I'm keepin' it hype Chief!) with Space Marines as the SW1s and SgtMaj Johnson as Professor Griff.
