Electronic Arts has sent out a rallying cry to the games industry to help it crack the Russian market before the Russians crack back.
EA’s VP of Central Europe, Peter Laughton, said in an interview with industry journal,
MCV:
“We would love everyone else to join us in trying to open up this market. It is important that the games industry spends on marketing in Russia properly, as well as holding events – in particular, shows like the one here in November, where you can expect around 50,000 consumers.”
EA recently unveiled plans to make a bigger push into Russia. The publishing giant intends to get closer to the "huge and rapidly growing ‘traditional’ retail market" in Russia, cultivate local talent and create more 'Russian' content.
EA calling for other publishers to get involved in a potentially huge market (the CIA estimates a population of 141,377,752) might initially seem counter-intuitive. Turning Russia into a more viable proposition for any of the established publishers is a huge task, however. Piracy is widespread, the console market lacks maturity, and the retail community, while growing, is still finding its feet. EA will not want to throw vast amounts of cash at the region only to see its efforts fall flat because cultivating the market is too big a task for one company.
