Final Gran Turismo 3 A Spec shown in Full Glory
One of the biggest crowd pullers at the Tokyo Game Show last weekend was Polyphony Digital’s Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec, which was shown complete for the first time, with all its spanky bits running to full effect.

The features that make Gran Turismo 3 unique were all playable including the greatly improved rally game and the all-new rainy roads pleasing the hoards of Japanese gamers and journalists.

The force-feedback steering wheel and pedal set up, the first prototypes of which were debuted at last year’s ECTS, are now complete and received a rapturous reception all round. The force the wheel exerts is surprisingly strong, and worked well demonstrating an impressive level of virtual physics programming. This is a first for a home console and should see race hungry driving fans shelling out around £100 for the set-up.

Sony was also showing us how the other half lives, linking up six PlayStation 2s and six Vega TV sets. Communicating via the I-Link cable, this is surely the pinnacle of home console entertainment.

“We are pleased with the tumultuous reception Gran Turismo 3 has received,” said a Sony spokesman. “We have now attained levels of realism previously thought impossible. The final build of A-Spec is exactly what PlayStation 2 racing fans wanted and we are going to deliver it. Everything has been improved since the game was first shown in playable form last year, and the inclusion of a custom force feedback wheel set-up, puts Gran Turismo 3 into a league of its own. There is nothing more we feel can be added to the game. It is now a complete driving experience.”
