Sony To Bring PSP Development Kits To Universities
Sony is set to put PSP development kits in the hands of UK universities, it was announced at the Develop Conference in Brighton.

The scheme will build on the existing PlayStation 2 Linux programming scheme run by over 20 universities. It will enable the universities to get their hands on the same development tools used by professional developers at a reduced rate (or 'student discount', if you prefer).

The scheme was announced by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's academic liaison, Sarah Lemarié, at the Games:Education event running alongside Develop as a platform for the industry to discuss its educational needs.

There are no direct commercial applications for the scheme. It will, however, mean that universities will be producing graduates better equipped to develop for the PSP, which SCEE president David Reeves has said is still “setting itself up” and in need of more games.

its a step in the right direction but this needs mainstreaming, sell a dev kit version of the psp to the general public where im sure many of top games and apps would appear allowing the psp the much needed boost of sales, i would buy a psp if a legit homebrew comminuty was around in fact im sure so would many others, come on sony see sense, you have a ps3 to allow distribution of this stuff.

Sony, that's very nice, but not everyone can get into university. I agree, this needs to be selling at Game etc, if you want to satisfy the homebrew community, and settle the homebrew dust you kicked with PSP. Why can't you Sony monkeys see this?

If MS can get XNA out to the public, so can Sony do the same with this. This is the only way to go, to make this fly properly.
