Sony is set to put PSP development kits in the hands of UK universities, it was announced at the Develop Conference in Brighton.
The scheme will build on the existing PlayStation 2 Linux programming scheme run by over 20 universities. It will enable the universities to get their hands on the same development tools used by professional developers at a reduced rate (or 'student discount', if you prefer).
The scheme was announced by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's academic liaison, Sarah Lemarié, at the Games:Education event running alongside Develop as a platform for the industry to discuss its educational needs.
There are no direct commercial applications for the scheme. It will, however, mean that universities will be producing graduates better equipped to develop for the PSP, which SCEE president David Reeves has
said is still “setting itself up” and in need of more games.
