Silent Hill to debut at Tokyo Game Show with new Sony 3D Sound Technology

Amazing breakthrough in videogame sound promised

Konami has announced that it will premier Silent Hill 2 on the PlayStation 2 at the Tokyo Game Show next weekend. The company has also stated that it will be incorporating Sony’s new S-Force 3D Sound Library Technology into the game.

Konami’s Japanese site says, “The technology can reproduce 3D positional audio by two channel speakers. Simply connecting to the TV set, it provides sound effect as if the speakers were positioned beside and behind, surrounding the player. Konami opens up a new era of horror game with the first time adoption of 3D audio system for a PS2 game.”

Using 3D sound in a horror game is possibly the best application for this type of technology. The idea of actually hearing noises behind you while playing Silent Hill 2 alone on a dark and thundery night is as appealing as it is worrying.

The new system will work in a fairly simple way. The two channels of sound that a stereo TV produces will be split into a variety of wave frequencies. The Sony add-on will then project sounds at different frequencies and times from each speaker meaning that the sound waves from each side will hit the player at different times, fooling the brain into thinking that there are various sound sources.

Silent Hill 2 will be in playable form at Konami’s booth at the TGS next weekend.
