Due for release on April 13th, C-12 Final Resistance has been tipped to top the charts following a rapturous reception from the gaming press and a blanket thumbs up from Joe Public after a first look at the demo featured on the cover of Official PlayStation Magazine.
Previously spotted in embryonic form at ECTS 2000, C-12 Final Resistance comes from the BAFTA-award winning Sony games developer SCE Studio Cambridge, whose previous triumph was Medievil 2, a camp romp through the Middle Ages. However, everything we've seen of C-12 so far suggests there is nothing camp about central character Lieutenant Vaughan, although a romp is not out of the question. Touted as a "true blockbuster" of a game, and a cross between Metal Gear Solid and Syphon Filter, but with bigger guns, C-12 Final Resistance melds both first-person and third-person action and adventure seamlessly. The post-apocalyptic setting is a result of alien invasion, and Vaughan is sent to wage war against the alien forces, which have taken to capturing humans and enslaving them, turning them into half-human, half-alien warriors. Gameplay is liberally topped with an atmosphere that builds tension through intense audio tracks that turn up the heat when entering an action point.
So, the world's favourite console is treated to another 'alien blaster'. Not exactly a forward-looking move on the developers' part you may think, but C-12's producer, John Meegan, had this to say about the game's development for the PSone: "We've definitely pushed the machine to its current limits, but I'd be delighted if somebody surpasses what we've achieved. It'd give us something higher to aim for in the future".
