Before we get into this, the basic fact is that the English invented the word 'soccer', so let's not get on our high horses when English public school types, Australians, Kiwis and North Americans use the term to describe the only game of football that is predominantly played with the feet.
Now for the story, apparently U.S. comedian, Drew Carey (not a relation to Brian, who played for Wrexham and some other teams) loves his soccer and is also an Xbox 360 fan. Drew (no relation to Louis Carey, of Coventry City and some other team) is apparently prepared to bet $10,000 per game that he can beat all kinds of famous people at FIFA '07 in a charity event in California tomorrow (June 5th).
The VIP invitation-only event at The Home Depot Center in Carson, sees Carey (no relation to Shaun Carey of Rushden and Diamonds fame) take on five players from both the U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Teams in FIFA Soccer 07 on the Xbox 360. For every game he loses, he will give $10,000 to the Mooch Myernick Memorial Fund.
The comedian gets to 'face off' with soon-to-be David Beckham colleague, Los Angeles Galaxy striker Landon Donovan, former Millwall keeper, Kasey Keller, U.S. Women’s National Team striker Abby Wambach and New England Revolution forward, Taylor Twellman. The funny man also gets to play the star with the coolest name in the game, U.S. Women’s goalkeeper Hope Solo - let's hope she can provide assists and, erm, shut-outs.
Soccer fans from all over the world will even have a chance to bid on an Xbox 360 Elite signed by Drew and the U.S. Soccer participants, which will be on eBay starting June 6th.
