Sooner or later it had to happen, someone had to scrape the very bottom of the license barrel, and today Codemasters has announced that it's done it. Dirty Dancing is getting made into a game.
Dirty Dancing the game hails from Codemasters' Online Gaming division and has been announced as a casual action puzzler.
"As casual gaming continues to explode in popularity, it is becoming more necessary than ever to provide compelling, multi-faceted titles that people can relate to in order to break away from the clutter," said Anne Parducci, executive vice president of marketing for Lionsgate which owns the rights to the film. "Dirty Dancing delivers compelling subject matter that has all the tools to become an instant hit online... For two decades, girls and women have identified with Baby, and through this wonderful game from Codemasters, they will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in her world like never before."
Frankly, SPOnG's a little bit creeped out by the whole thing. A character called 'Baby' getting seduced by Patrick Swazye through the power of saucy dance? Sounds like a recipe for a court hearing to us. That's not to say, of course, that SPOnG doesn't get glassy-eyed when it's knee-deep in the zombie guts of Resident Evil 4 and, from the depths of shuffle on its iPod, Hungry Eyes comes on.
Somewhere SPOnG saw Dirty Dancing called “Star Wars for girls”, so fingers crossed that in a few years we'll have 82 listings for Dirty Dancing spin-offs.
Dirty Dancing will be available for the PC at the back-end of the year. When that happens, you'll be able to find us at home, weeping in the dark.
