Wii Shop Channel for New, Original Games Launching Soon
Nintendo is to make an official announcement about a new Wii Shop channel delivering new, original titles in the very near future, according to System 3’s MD Mark Cale.

Cale claimed in a recent interview that, “Impossible Mission would be one of the first titles we're going to be launching on Wii, [that will] be available from retailers, and to download as well, and that's where we're going to be exploring what Nintendo can actually do in terms of downloadable content, and see if it can match Xbox Live."

Let’s be clear. This is NOT Wii’s Virtual Console service that Cale is referring to, but an entirely new service in the works.

Cale continued, "They're not actually calling it the Virtual Console, but in the next few months there will be various announcements I'm sure made by Nintendo that will offer users a system that will be similar to that of what Microsoft is offering at present, which is the ability to download content…. It really depends on when Nintendo are rolling out their strategy, which I expect will be within the next two months.”

SPOnG has spoken to Nintendo in the UK this morning, who were not able to comment on the planned download service for new, original titles.

More on this as we get it.

Yeah, Impossible Mission is an old game.

I don't know. Perhaps it might be a channel to can download
larger XNA or Arcade style titles. Guess they'll say something soon on it.

What's still needed is a bloody hard drive, though.

yeh, but Impossible Mission is/was not a SNES, NES TurboGraphx or N64 title - which means/suggests that a new channel is being developed for past games that were not on these platforms , as well as new titles...

It's "Impossible Mission", for all those getting it wrong, and it's being given an overhaul/update whilst there will still be a C64 version within it. Pretty much like the updated games available on XBLA.

cue usb hard drive support, can't see this working without it.

if it was an old game it would be on virtual console surely? if it's an old game my guess is that this is a modern remake.

I wonder what the difference between retail and download pricing will be?....

This isn't really all that difficult to understand.
Virtual Console games are all original code written for old systems. They run on (an) emulator(s) that are written for the Wii.

The new service will allow you to download games written for the Wii. They will not be running on an emulator, even if the games are re-makes of old existing titles.

As for hard disc storage, why should it be required? Not all great games need gigs of storage. Look at all the fantastic GBA games like Metroid or Castlevania. They were around 8MB each and provided hours of quality entertainment. Bigger is not always better.

No, it's not needed, but they might as well. It can make any game better, or easier to make. Plus it gives you space to store files - it has an SD card slot anyway, so it's not much difference - plus, they can make use of the USB sockets.

If it's going to encourage people to make games for it, or encourage people to buy a Wii, why not? It's not forcing people, it's giving them the option.

I agree with the 'bigger is not always better' statement - heck, thats why I bought a wii in the first place - but the storage requirements for wii are starting to go up at a fair pace. With internet channel, VC downloads, other channels and now new games, that 512mb of onboard memory is going to get pretty stuffed, and while SD is good for storage the access and transfer speed compared to USB or onboard memory is woeful.

I also don't think nintendo would want people to have to copy files between different memory locations every time they wanted to play a different game - that doesn't fit their current 'console for everyone' stance.

If nintendo see this as a good distribution method for the future (and i think they do) then I think they'll go for something more elaborate than just small games imho - I can see the nintendo usb hard/flash drive coming to a store near you soon.
